Pacific Coast Charter School Review

Pacific Coast Charter School opened in 1999 as a charter school to provide students in Kindergarten through 12th grades with an option over traditional school settings and to learn at their own pace. The school prepares students for college as well as to join the workforce with high educational goals, development & refining of lifelong learning strategies, and excellence in areas of special interest.

Along with core subjects, the school offers very few extracurricular activities. There are community service options as well as field trips available with all age groups and parents love that. This is a downside expressed by parents and students that there are so few activities. Students would like to see more activities where they can enjoy various clubs such as student government.

The opinion of the school is rated very high with parents proud of the achievements of their children. This school is great for those students that fail in traditional class settings. Learning at their on pace helps. Students expressed they like the school but as mentioned above they would like to see more extracurricular activities.

The Academic Performance Index increased by 61 points from the previous year to a score of 721. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are pleased with the increase but are working with the school and their children to increase that score even more.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was not available for all grade levels but those that were available showed mixed scores. Some were above the state averages while others were below.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. Students at Pacific Coast Charter School had low results with the exit exam with 66% passing the English exam with the state average at 58% and 73% in math with the state at 84%.

Overall, the school is providing students with a quality education. To ensure the school is a good fit for your family, you should speak with parents that have students enrolled prior to enrollment.
