Orange County Educational Arts Academy (OCEAA) Review

Orange County Educational Arts Academy (OCEAA) opened as a charter school in 2005 to provide students with an alternative to traditional schools with a two language immersion program. The school serves students in kindergarten through 8th grades. The main reason families choose the school is that the program is based on the needs of the individual student with a focus on technology.

Along with core subjects the school offers sports, extra curricular and student clubs including drawing, painting, choir, instrumental music lessons, theory, vocal lessons, creative writing, dance, drama, basketball, arts & crafts, chess, cooking, gardening, girl scouts, homework help, and student council. Students love all the options the school offers but some mentioned they would like to see more sports besides basketball.

Some parents stated they really like the school as everyone is treated equal and everyone is willing to help one another. The majority of teachers are very dedicated and there is a very low turnover with most being here since the school opened, which was very appealing to several parents. A few parents commented the school is not as safe as they state and that they are not as academically centered, as they would like. Students on the other hand, really enjoy attending the school and their teachers.

The Academic Performance Index increased 25 points from the previous year to 793. The statewide goal is 800. Most parents stated they are very pleased with the increase and are so happy that they are close to the statewide goal.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed. Examples include 75% of 2nd graders passed the math exam with the state average at 64%, 57% of 4th graders passed the English exam with the state average at 67%, and 51% of 6th graders passed the math exam with the state average at 55%. Parents were not worried about the lower scores as the school is doing better than previous years.

The school is doing a good job providing students with the educational tools needed to be prepared for the remainder of their educational years. To ensure the school offers the learning environment that is best for your family, you should take a tour before enrolling your child.
