Options for Youth opened their Burbank campus in 1997 to serve at risk students with an alternative to traditional schools. The school serves students in grades seventh through 12th grades. The curriculum is one that offers independent study as well as small group instructional formats. The school offers a safe learning environment where students can set goals and have the support they need to succeed. The student population is diverse with 56% Hispanic, 29% White, 6% African American, 2% Filipino, 1% American Indian, 1% Asian, and 6% unspecified.
Along with core subjects, students have the opportunity to participate in various extra curricular activities, sports, and clubs including student council, field trips, community service, prom, chess club, board game club, Mic club, band, dance team, drama club, Fantasy Role Playing Game Club, and sports like bowling, soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball, and kickball. Not all activities are available at each campus.
Parents love the way the students can work at their own pace and work toward obtaining their high school diploma. Students said they really enjoy going to school, feel safe, and are learning better here than other schools. Most students expressed that at this school there is no drama like other schools and bullying is a thing of the past. Teachers are very respectful and help every time they need any extra attention. Many students stated that they were ready to quit school before enrolled in Option for Youth. Now, they really like attending school and are excited about their futures.
The Academic Performance Index increased 37 points from the previous year to 722. The statewide goal is 800. Parents and teachers stated that even though they have not hit the goal of the state, the school improved quite a bit over the previous year and they are very proud of each student that helped to make this score.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
