Opportunities for Learning – Baldwin Park II Review

Opportunities for Learning opened their Baldwin Park II campus in 2007 for at risk students in 7th through 12th grades. The school offers independent study as well as site-based instruction. The school serves students that are considered at risk to achieve their high school diploma. These students are often ones that are ethnic minorities, socio-economically challenged, parenting teens, pregnant, and students that have dropped out of school or are not attending. The school has a diverse student population, which includes 72% Hispanic, 22% African American, 3% White, 1% Asian, 1% unspecified, and 1% Pacific Islander.

Parents are very pleased with the school that is providing their children with a second chance to receive their high school diploma in a safe and nurturing environment. Students expressed they feel important going to school and are really enjoying learning. Teachers are very helpful and dedicated to ensuring students succeed.

Most parents were very impressed with the variety of electives offered and students could not be happier with all the choices. Some students did state they would like to see sports or student clubs available but really like all the electives.

The Academic Performance Index increased 26 points from the previous year to 694. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are pleased with the increase.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mainly below state averages. Even with these scores, parents expressed their students were doing much here than previous schools.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. Students at the school saw scores of 80% passing the English exam with the state average at 83% and 71% in math with the state at 84%. Parents are very excited about the number of students passing the exams since the majority of the students would not have graduated at all if not attending this school.

The school is doing a wonderful job providing students with the educational tools needed to obtain their high school diploma. To ensure the learning environment is one that will fit your family, you should take a tour.
