Omega McDowell Campus – Sturgeon Middle School Review

The Omega McDowell Campus opened their charter school at Sturgeon Middle School in 1999 as an alternative to public schools and to give students in 5th through 8th grades a new opportunity for their learning environment. The school offers a learning environment that is nurturing as well as provides the tools needed to prepare students for high school and the world.

The goals of Omega McDowell Campus are to provide students with a safe learning environment where they can reach their potential and succeed in life while attaining their own personal goals. The student body is 78% Hispanic, 13% Black, and 9% not specified. Along with core subjects, the school provides extra curricular activities including film production, wrestling, multimedia, and a law enforcement vocational program.

Parents and students are very happy with the school. They like the teachers even though each one has their own set of rules. No rules are set by administration, therefore there is no organization with teachers making their own rules and guidelines to follow, which can be very confusing for students.

Students participated in the AIMS series of exams, which may give you a better idea if the school is actually helping students learn and master core subjects.

Percentage of students in fifth grade that passed the exam was 35% below state average in reading, 5% in writing, and 32% below in math. Sixth, Seventh, and eighth graders were below average in reading, writing, and math with percentages about the same if not more not passing the exams than 5th graders.

It would be in your best interest to check out other schools in the area. From the comments and the tests, scores it seems the school is not organized and your child will suffer by not learning needed skills. Things may change so it is always best to check out the school and talk with other parents so you can make the best decision.
