Oakland School for the Arts Review

Oakland School for the Arts opened in 200 for students in sixth through twelfth grades. As the name suggests the school is arts-based with a focus on pedagogical approaches. The school also offers a college-prep program with either four years of private or ensemble instruction.

Every child deserves the opportunity to be creative. That is what the teachers and staff promote at Oakland. The students love that they can choose from dance digital media, instrumental and vocal music, literary arts, production design, theater and the visual arts. Parents are happy to see their children thriving and coming out of their shells. A few parents were a bit concerned about the academics side until their children started attending the school. Most parents are very impressed with the teachers, staff, and curriculum.

The Academic Performance Index showed a score of 823, which was a 37-point academic increase from last year’s numbers. The statewide goal is 800 giving parents another reason to be happy.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

On nearly every exam that was give across each grade level, the students surpassed the state averages. The 10th graders, however, showed incredibly low numbers with 0% of the class passing the exam.

California uses the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) to test high school students’ skills in English language arts and mathematics. the students tested excelled in both areas.

The Oakland School for the Arts is providing an excellent education with all kinds of great opportunities. To ensure this type of environment is best for your child, you should take a tour before enrolling your child.
