Oakland Charter Academy opened in 1993 to serve students in sixth through eighth grades. The focus is on making the transition to English by using the Sheltered English approach. The curriculum is designed with coursework that includes instructional strategies as well as teacher guidance.

Oakland offers its students the opportunity to excel in many ways and parents appreciate that. Students can participate in band, chess club, tutoring/study hall, rugby, rowing and Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth for scholarships. There are also physical education classes and college prep, which is great to start for the younger students.

The reviews for Oakland Charter Academy are mixed. On one hand the students and parents can both agree that the curriculum is tough, but worth the results. On the other hand, they both say that the teachers do not have control over their class, the staff has a bad attitude and the expectations are set too high. Parents agree that the school is optimistic and just need to work on a few areas to be a great school.

The Academic Performance Index showed a score of 867 which was down 65 points from last year. Parents are still impressed as the statewide goal is 800. Other parents are worried about the drop since it was such a large drop.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The 6th grade test results showed scores above and below the state while grade 7th grade exceeded the state average. In 8th grade, the test results were above the state averages as well.

Oakland Charter Academy is providing students with the educational tools needed to succeed while being prepared for high school and beyond. It would still be a good idea to visit the school before making your final decision.
