Novato Charter School Review

Novato Charter School opened in 1995 to provide students in kindergarten through 8th grade with an alternative to traditional schools. The school uses the Waldorf method with integrated, project based and development approach to the curriculum.

Along with core subjects the school offers drama, music, Digital Arts, Mural Painting, Woodworking, Ceramics, Yoga, Creative Writing, Journalism, Choir, Cooking, Team Sports, Handwork, and physical education. Along with these activities, the school also offers an organic gardening program and outdoor education and field studies. Parents are very happy with the unique opportunities the school offers for their students. Students really like the fun things that the school offers.

The majority of parents stated the school is doing a very good job providing students with a quality education. Most parents like the teachers and the entire community and feel of the school. On the other hand, a few parents stated that some of the rules of the school are a bit too strict and even outdated such as no cell phones and even kindergarten students are not allowed to mention such things as Spongebob, which is considered TV Talk. Students like all the fun act ivies and especially love the festivals, music, and plays.

The Academic Performance Index increased 7 points from the previous year to 939. The statewide goal is 800. Most parents are very proud of the score and know their children are learning in a safe and nurturing environment.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was above state averages across the board in all grades and all subjects with 100% passing in some grade levels and subjects.

Overall, the school is providing students with an excellent education. If you have any concerns regarding the learning environment, it would be in your best interest to take a tour before enrolling your child.
