Northwest Preparatory at Piner-Olivet Charter Review

Northwest Preparatory at Piner-Olivet Charter opened in 2004 for students in 7th through 12th grades. The school offers a small community style learning environment. The student body is diverse with 57% Hispanic or Latino, 29% White, 8% African American, 3% Asian, 2% American Indian, and 2% Filipino.

The school offers project based curriculum that is truly student centered as many parents expressed. The school works with students individually to help students become active learners that want to take charge of their own academic growth and personal growth. Students love the process that school uses to teach which is through exploration, discovery, analysis, and design. Parents expressed that students truly enjoy going to school and seem excited about their futures. The majority of students love the way the school utilizes the internet to provide more resources as well as discovery. All students expressed they really like the teachers and the small classrooms

The Academic Performance Index declined 19 points from the previous year to 650. The statewide goal is 800. Parents were a little disappointed with the test scores but still believe the school is on the right track.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mainly below state averages, but some grade levels and subjects saw improvement such as 8th grade English that was still below state averages but better than the previous year.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. Students at New Millennium Secondary school did very well with the exit exam with 79% passing the English exam with the state average at 83% and 68% in math with the state at 84%.

Even though the test exams were below state averages in most cases, students and parents still believe the school is doing an excellent job and is improving. If you have any concerns, you should take a tour of the school prior to enrolling your child.
