North Valley Charter Academy Review

North Valley Charter Academy opened in 2003 to serve students in 6th through 12th grades. The school offers a challenging curriculum in a safe learning environment that focuses on strong discipline and respect training. The school does offer a few activities for students to participate in but the school is mainly focused on academics to ensure students have the credits to graduate high school and are prepared for the real world. The student body is diverse with 68% Hispanic or Latino, 18% White, 11% African American and a small population of American Indian, Asian, and Filipino.

Most parents really like the school and the staff. A few parents stated that the school is more geared toward students that have issues such as not being able to attend traditional school due to disabilities or rebelling. One parent stated that she removed her child due to the friends and activities her child was beginning to engage in when she started attending the school. Other parents stated that the strict discipline is just what their children needed to get them to start being involved in learning. Students overall stated they really like the teachers and the school, however, a few are not fond of the strict rules and would like a more relaxed environment.

The Academic Performance Index increased 47 points from the previous year to 731. The statewide goal is 800. Teachers and parents alike are very proud of this figure.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams was mainly below average with only a few above averages. This was not a huge issue with parents or teachers since the scores are better than the previous year.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. Students at North Valley Charter Academy did very well with the exit exam with 94% passing the English exam with the state average at 83% and 94% in math with the state at 84%. This was one of the most exciting discussions as almost all 10th graders passed the exams, which made the entire school proud.

The school is doing an excellent job of providing students with a quality education. If you have any concerns, it would be a good idea to take a tour and talk with other parents that have students enrolled.
