Newcastle Charter School Review

Newcastle Charter School opened in 2005 to serve students in kindergarten through eighth grades with an option over traditional schools. The school provides small class sizes and individual attention to all students to ensure their success. There are several different after school programs, as well as many activities in even the younger grades to give students a well-rounded education including such activities as dance, music, and physical education classes.

The opinion of parents was very mixed with some loving the school and others stating they were pulling their children out of the school. The parents with negative comments explained that the school does not have a true schedule for students and that younger students are out on field trips or other activities that did not pertain to their educational needs. Some even went so far as to say the office was a mess and very unprofessional. Other parents expressed that the school is the best in the area offering students more than just a regular education with caring staff and teachers. Many were impressed with all the activities the school offered for students. Students stated they really like their teachers and are having fun learning.

The Academic Performance Index increased 26 points from the previous to 897. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are very proud of this score and said they know they made the right decision in enrolling their child.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was above average across the board except for 3rd grade English with 43% passing and the state average at 48% and 4th grade math at 67% with the average at 71%.

Even though a few parents had negative comments, overall the school is providing an excellent education that helps students prepare for the remainder of their educational years and beyond. You can take a tour if you have any concerns to ensure the environment is one in which your child will excel.
