New Millennium Secondary School Review

New Millennium Secondary School opened in 2008 as a charter school to provide students in 9th through 12th grades with an option over traditional school settings. The school prepares students for college as well as to join the workforce. The small class size and innovative learning methods is one that students and parents both have positive opinions. The student body is diverse with 74% African American, 15% Hispanic or Latino, with smaller percentages of Filipino, White, American Indian, and Asian.

Along with core subjects, the school offers very few sports and no other extra curricular activities. The only sports available include basketball, soccer, and softball. This is a downside expressed by parents and students. Students would like to see more activities where they can enjoy various clubs such as student government.

The opinion of the school is very mixed with most parents proud of the achievements of their children with a large number of students raising their reading levels. While other parents expressed their concern over the number of students that do not follow rules and are still attending the school. The major complaints from parents are the disorganization seen with after school programs. Students expressed they like the school but as mentioned above they would like to see more than just after school programs.

The Academic Performance Index increased 9 points from the previous to 673. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are pleased with the increase.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was not available at the time of this writing.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. Students at New Millennium Secondary school did very well with the exit exam with 83% passing the English exam with the state average at 83% and 73% in math with the state at 84%.

Overall, the school is providing students with an exceptional education. It would be in your best interest to ask questions regarding the exams to learn if the school is meeting state standards.
