New Los Angeles Charter School Review

New Los Angeles Charter School opened in 2008 to serve students in 6th through 8th grades. The school offers a unique learning environment with cultural diversity seen in the ethnicity of the student body, which is comprised of 39% African American, 31% Hispanic or Latino, 23% White and 8% Asian.

The community is very pleased and even excited about the charter school that is opening doors for students to become life long learners as well as be prepared for higher education.

The curriculum allows students to learn in an enriching environment that is quite unique offering various topics of students such as Murder Mystery Math, Greek Reader’s Theater, Poetry Slam, Fantasy Football Mathematics, Resume writing, and Public Speaking to name a few.

Parents expressed that the health and wellness courses are right on target and are truly helping their students with courses like drugs & alcohol, gossip & bullying, internet safety, sex education, eating disorders, and depression/suicide.

Students love the outdoor education opportunities with field trips to Temescal Canyon, Catalina Island, and Sequoia National Forest. The unique overnight trips as explained by students allow them to learn more about nature and having fun with friends.

Along with core subjects, students have the chance to enjoy a wide array of extra curricular activities, sports, and student clubs. These include design, drawing, painting, photography, choir, creative writing, dance, drama, improve, poetry, and film production. Sports offered include baseball, basketball, cross-country, volleyball, track, soccer, and football. Student clubs available are drill team, dance club, homework help, transgender club, robotics club, sewing club, yoga, yearbook, and student council.

The parents and students all had positive remarks regarding the school, staff, and teachers. Most expressed they are very pleased with the learning environment and the opportunities the school offers. Most students stated they really enjoy going to school now and do not want to miss one day.

The Academic Performance Index dropped 73 points from the previous year to 740. The statewide goal is 800. Parents explained that the drop in this score was due to adapting a new program that is really helping students and they did not understand the drop.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mainly below state averages, but once again, parents are not worrying about the scores as students are learning and enjoying attending school.

To ensure the school is a good fit for your child, it would be a good idea to visit the school and learn more about the new program before enrolling your child.
