New City School – Long Beach Boulevard Campus Review

New City School – Long Beach Boulevard Campus opened in 2000 for students in grades Kindergarten though eighth. The school is focused on turning each child into independent thinkers who are experts in reasoning and creative expression. Teachers also strive for students to become proficient in both English and Spanish. The academic program emphasizes arts, technology, and the natural environment with project-based learning.

Along with core subjects students can choose from a variety of activities based upon the arts and technology. This allows each student to develop his or her on creative side. However, the school does not offer sports or student clubs, which many students stated was the major downside. Many stated they would like the opportunity to compete in sports.

What parents like most about New City School – Long Beach Boulevard Campus is the bilingual integration. This is something that parents feel will help their children to secure jobs in the future. They also feel that the teachers are very supportive and encouraging. Some parents feel that the material being taught is too simple and does not challenge their children. Parents are concerned with the test scores and are looking for improvements there.

The students have seen improvements in their grades, which they like, and so do their parents. They simply like their school and their teachers. Going to school means learning something new and for most that is very exciting.

The Academic Performance Index showed a academic increase from 662 to 701. The statewide goal is 800 meaning that the school is working towards that goal and to surpass it.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The test results for students at New City School – Long Beach Boulevard Campus showed that across each grade and test subjects there are areas to work on. The scores fell below the state averages.
Overall, New City School at the Long Beach Boulevard Campus is doing a good job of providing the educational tools for students to succeed and is improving each year. If you have any concerns, it would be in your best interest to talk with other parents that have students attending prior to enrollment.
