Mountain Oaks School Review

Mountain Oaks School opened in 2003 for students in grades Kindergarten though 12th. This is an independent school that supports families in home schooling with great instruction tools and a strong academic program. They honor both the student and parent by teaching with online opportunities.

At Mountain Oaks, students are encouraged to show off their creativity with classes that involve both science and art. Students in grades 9th through 12th are encouraged to participate in sports activities provided their grades are good. These sports include girl’s volleyball and softball, boy’s baseball, co-ed soccer, golf and basketball for both boys and girls.

Parents love the freedom that Mountain Oaks offers. It is not only the students that thrive here like never before as reported by several parents. The parents are so involved with the education that they get a strong sense of accomplishment as well. Parents also raved about the opportunities for their children to work on their own as well as a team. Small classes offer more individualized instruction, which was something both parents and students liked. Students really enjoy the school and the many activities the school has to offer. Some parents were concerned that home schooling would not allow their children to participate in sports, but at Mountain Oak School, this is not an issue at all.

The school was also well liked because it teaches in a way that works for children that need something different. It is not for every child, as parents stated, but worth a try if your child needs a different approach to learning.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline in academic growth from 708 to 693. The statewide goal for California schools is 800. This was not a huge issue, explained parents as students in the program come and go and all students are striving to do better.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The students at Mountain Oaks School showed test results that fell below the state averages in some areas and were above in others. For example the 3rd grade Math exam was passed by 44% of stunets with the state average at 69%.

California uses the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) to test high school students’ skills in English language arts and mathematics. At Mountain Oaks School 89% of 10th graders passed the English Language Arts exam with the state average at 83%. For the Math exam 86% of students passed with the state at 84%.

Parents love the connection to their child’s education that they get at Mountain Oaks School. Most parents expressed that if you are looking for a way to be more involved in your child’s education while ensuring they receive a quality education, then this is the school for you. To learn more you should take a tour to ensure the learning environment will fit your child’s needs.
