Monterey Bay Charter School Review

Monterey Bay Charter School opened in 2006 in Pacific Grove to provide families with an alternative to traditional school. The school serves students in kindergarten through 8th grades with a curriculum based on the Waldorf method. The student population is 71% White.

Along with core subjects, Monterey Bay Charter School offers various subjects due to the Waldorf method that includes art within the framework of the curriculum. These subjects include strings, games, handwork, and choral singing. Students in 6th through 8th grades are also taught technology/environmental education as well as perform at least 15 hours of community service each year. Students receive credit for community service, which may include work on the school campus or volunteering outside the school for organizations.

Some parents are not as enthusiastic with the sports and extra curricular activities offered as they are with the curriculum. The only available club is gardening with extra curricular activities being visual arts, painting, orchestra, and choir. Students stated they would like to join sport teams but there is none available. Even though the school does not offer team sports, they do have a variety of events throughout the year that parents and students expressed are really great.

The majority of parents is pleased with the creative side of the school and stated that the teachers and staff are very talented and caring. Practically every parent was very impressed with the Waldorf method that provides students with real life skills instead of just book learning. Teachers are described as using various methods of teachings to help each student on an individual basis to ensure that each child understands and is learning at the best of their ability. Most parents are very excited that the school is working with students to instill eco-friendly behavior and the love of learning. Students stated they really love the school better than other schools they have attended, but as mentioned earlier would like the opportunity to join sports such as baseball or volleyball.

The Academic Performance Index showed an increase in academic growth of 21 points to 877. The statewide goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

Students at Monterey Bay Charter School did very well on the majority of the exams. Examples include 69% of 2nd graders passed the math example with the state average at 64%, 96% of 4th graders passed the English exam with the state average at 67%, and 48% of 6th graders passed the math exam with the state average at 55%.

The school overall, is doing an excellent job of providing students with the educational tools they need to succeed. Parents and students are very happy with the school community, which makes a huge statement. To make sure the school is the right fit your child, you should take a tour before enrolling your child.
