Monsenor Oscar Romero Charter Middle School Review


Monsenor Oscar Romero Charter Middle School opened in 2007 for students in 6th through 8th grades. The school provides an alternative to traditional schools that closes on the achievement gap found in urban schools. The school is 99% Hispanic with an average of 325 students enrolled per year.

Parents are happy that Monsenor Oscar Romero Charter Middle School opened in their community to help students that often fall between the cracks in traditional schools. The school offers a variety of clubs and sports that students express are wonderful, however, they would like to see a few more activities that would allow them to spend more time out of the classroom with their friends.

The Academic Performance Index showed that Monsenor Oscar Romero Charter Middle School increased 18 points to 739. Parents are very pleased that the school is improving in their academic growth and students are learning better than when attending traditional schools.

Parents expressed that teachers are very caring and want each student to excel. The teachers are very knowledgeable and work with students on a personal level as reported by the majority of parents. A few parents expressed concerns over the policies of the school stating that the school needs improvement in their rules; however, most parents are very happy with the rules and policies of the school, which provides a safe learning environment. Students stated that teachers are very good and help them succeed even when they need extra help to understand any subject. Parents and students alike expressed that the school is a friendly and caring community with high quality staff and teachers.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The results of the California Standards Tests were not available at this time; however, with the increase seen in the API students did better this year than the previous year.
