Mary Collins Charter School Review

Mary Collins Charter School opened in 2002 as a year round charter school to serve students in kindergarten through 8th grades. The school utilizes a constructivist approach to learning. On average, the school has 280 students enrolled per year, which aids in providing a small close-knit environment.

Along with core subjects, Mary Collins Charter School offers a variety of extra curricular activities for students that wish to participate which include dance, band, drama, chorus, painting, computer arts, and photography. Sports available include football, basketball, soccer, track, yoga, and physical education classes. Other programs offered include science & technology, debate, yearbook, newspaper, student government, community service, and academic contests.

Comments from parents are very mixed with many stating the school is providing a quality education, while others state that their children are not learning a thing. Many parents complained that the teachers allow more playtime in the younger grades than actually school courses. Students said they like their teachers and enjoy all the fun activities.

The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 810 to 830. The statewide goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams was very mixed with some above state averages and others below. A few examples include 75% of 4th graders passed the English Language Arts exam with the state at 67% and 49% of 3rd graders passed the math exam with the state average at 69%.

With the comments of parents being very mixed and the test scores being mixed as well, it would be a good idea to visit the school prior to enrolling your child. The school is doing a fair job of providing a quality education.
