Making Waves Academy Charter School Review

Making Waves Academy Charter School opened in 2007 to provide students in 5th through 9th grade that are low-income students with the same academic and developmental opportunities found in affluent communities across the nation.

The school offers a rigorous standards based curriculum with college prep courses, technology blended education, advanced math and science program, free after school tutoring, and character education classes.

Along with core subjects, Making Waves Academy Charter School understands that the whole child needs addressed. Due to this, the school also offers a variety of extra curricular activities, sports, and other programs. These include drawing, dance, film production, computer arts, physical education classes, basketball, martial arts, soccer, track, swimming, yearbook, science & technology, and multimedia.

Parent’s opinion of the school has changed recently since administration fired many of the favorite teachers. The parents expressed that administration is poor and that leadership in the school needs improvement. Until this year, parents were very pleased with the school and the devoted teachers that school offered. Students at this time, are a bit confused due to the change in teachers.

The Academic Performance Index showed in an increase in academic growth from 790 to 797.The statewide goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams at Making Waves Academy Charter School was mixed. Examples include 47% of 5th graders passed the English Language Arts exam with the state average at 63% and 63% of 5th graders passed the science exam with the average at 60%.

With the comments of parents, it would be a good idea to visit the school and talk with other parents that have students enrolled before making your final decision.
