MAAC Community Charter School Review

MAAC Community Charter School opened in 2001 for students in 9th through 12th grades. The school provides a challenging curriculum for at-risk students to receive an opportunity to complete their high school graduation requirements and gain a vocational trade for a future career choice.

Students attending MAAC get more than just an education. They get their lives back on track with small classes, project based learning, computer technology and a science lab. No other extra curricular activities, sports, or student clubs are available as the school focuses on students earning the credits and knowledge to receive their high school diploma.

Parents love that this school exists for students that may have been left behind. It gives them a chance to succeed and the students rave about that as well. Both parents and students felt that the school raised their self-esteem and helped them become involved in the community. The test scores were a concern, but everyone is working hard to improve those numbers.

The Academic Performance Index showed an increase in academic growth from 486 to 538.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The test results showed lower scores than the state averages leaving room for improvement.

California uses the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) to test high school students’ skills in English language arts and mathematics. The students at MAAC Community Charter School scored below the state averages again with numbers in the 20% range in both test subjects.

For students that are considering dropping out of school or are having a hard time adapting to traditional schools, the school is doing an excellent job of providing a safe learning environment. You should speak with other parents and teachers before enrolling your child to ensure the learning environment will help your child reach their goals.
