Lou Dantzler Preparatory Middle School Review

Lou Dantzler Preparatory Middle School opened in 2007 for students in middle school. The goal is to prepare the students for college, develop each student’s individual talents and train them to be leaders. The curriculum is rigorous and challenging.

Along with core subjects, students can participate in band, dance, theater/drama, physical education classes, tennis, academic contests, newspaper, student council, yearbook and debate.

The parents of Lou Dantzler Preparatory Middle School are mostly concerned with the new principal. Most parents stated they noticed a change as soon as the new principal came to the school. Other parents expressed that there is a high turn over of teachers since the new principal took over which is causing issues with the students. The students stated that the school is okay, but they would like to see more extra-curricular and sports like chorus and basketball.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decrease in academic growth from 723 to 643. This has been a concern for parents. The statewide goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The test results for Lou Dantzler Preparatory Middle School students have fallen below the state averages and in some cases the numbers were very low. For example, 5% of 6th graders passed their Math exam with the state average at 55%.

While the numbers are concerning for parents a tour may help you make an educated decision. Also talk with other parents to ensure the school is working toward improvement since there have been recent changes.
