Los Angeles Leadership Academy Review

Los Angeles Leadership Academy opened in 2003 for grades 6th through 12th. The curriculum is themed around social justice with project-based instruction. The academic program strives to prepare students for college with a college prep curriculum and make them better students while becoming productive community members.

Along with core subjects, Los Angeles Leadership Academy offers extra curricular activities, and student clubs including computer arts, chorus, dance, theater/drama, basketball, track, student council, yearbook, community service and academic contests.

The parent comments regarding Los Angeles Leadership Academy are quite mixed. Some parents love the teachers and how committed they are to each student’s success. The school brings out the best in its students. Other parents are concerned with the area around the school is not a good neighborhood and there are rumors of gangs in the area.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decrease in academic growth from 717 to 708. The statewide goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

Some of the test results from the students showed scores higher than the state average while others were below. On the 8th grade Science exam, 66% passed which matched the state average.

California uses the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) to test high school students’ skills in English language arts and mathematics. Again the students matched the state average of 83% on the English exam. On the Math exam 80% passed with the state average at 84%.

The school is providing a quality education and providing a safe learning environment for students. If you have any concerns, it would be in your best interest to visit the school and talk with parents that have students attending prior to enrolling your child.
