Literacy First Charter School – Primary Academy Review

Literacy First Charter School opened their Primary Academy in 2001 to serve students in kindergarten through 8th grades with an alternative to traditional schools. Literacy First Charter School focuses on hand on learning with a back to basics curriculum. The school works with students on an individual basis utilizing a variety of groupings and instruction methods to ensure that every child will succeed.

Along with core subjects, the Primary Academy campus offers extra curricular activities including dance, drawing, and computer arts. Sports offered include physical education classes and soccer. Other programs available are academic contests, science & technology, and community service.

Most parents are very pleased with the school stating that staff and teachers are dedicated. A few parents however, stated that teachers and staff could be rude. Students overall like the school, but are not happy with the choices for extra curricular activities. Most would like to see more opportunities in the way of sports and clubs.

The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 892 to 901. The statewide goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams was equal to state averages or above state averages in all grade levels and all subjects.

Even with the decent comments and the great exam scores it would be best to take a tour of the school to ensure the learning environment will fit with your family.
