KIPP Heartwood Academy Review

KIPP Heartwood Academy opened in 2004 for grades 5th through 8th. The focus at KIPP Heartwood Academy is a college-prep curriculum. The goal is achieved by extending the school day and also providing a longer school year. Students use knowledge, critical thinking skills and character traits to succeed in life and school.

Along with core subjects and college prep, students can also choose from extracurricular activities. Those include band, chorus photography, drawing/painting, theater/drama, Spanish, debate, student council, science and technology. There are also academic contests and vocational programs in food services, production and management. For athletics, there is cross-country, football, martial arts/self defense, softball, rugby, track and physical education classes.

Most parents stated they love KIPP Heartwood Academy. The teachers are great and while the outside appearance could use some renovation, it is what is inside that count. The academic program is strict, but motivating to ensure kids to do their best. Students said they like their teachers and the way the teachers help them when they need it.

The Academic Performance Index showed an increase in academic growth from 900 to 906. The statewide goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. In almost every grade and test exam, but one, the students at KIPP Heartwood Academy exceeded the results set by the state average. On the 8th grade Geometry exam 69% of the students passed with the state average set at 87%.

The school is doing a great job preparing students for the remainder of their educational years. As with any school, before enrolling your child, you should take a tour to make sure the school is a good fit for your family.
