Journey School Review

Journey School opened in 2000 as a charter school for students in the community of Aliso Viejo. The school serves students in kindergarten through 8th grades with an alternative to traditional schools while providing a learning environment utilizing the Waldorf method. The school stresses the arts and integrates the arts into academics.

Along with core subjects, Journey School offers extra curricular activities such as band, orchestra, dance, drawing, sculpture, chorus, and drama. Sports available for students that wish to participate include baseball, physical education classes, yoga, and gymnastics. Science and technology is also offered.

The parents are divided when it comes to the way they feel about Journey School. The main reason, many did not know about the Waldorf method prior to enrolling their child and are not impressed with the curriculum. Others parents stated the curriculum is excellent and helps balance the arts with core subjects. Students expressed they love the school and all their teachers.

The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 830 to 858. The statewide goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed with some below average and others above average. Examples include 85% of 3rd graders passed the exam with the state average at 48% and 42% of 4th graders passed the math exam with the state average at 71%.

If you are not familiar with the Waldorf method of teaching it would be a good idea to learn more before enrolling your child. Take a tour of the school and speak with teachers to ensure the learning environment is one that will help your child succeed.
