International School of Monterey Review

International School of Monterey opened in 2001 for grades Kindergarten though eighth. The International Baccalaureate framework is the basis for the curriculum. The school was built to show its students the word as a whole with aspects of research, study, business and standards for their education as well as work goals. The charter school is offering a unique learning environment very different from traditional schools.

Students are offered a variety of extracurricular courses, which include computer arts, chorus, ceramics/sculpture, drawing/painting, theater/drama, Mandarin, Spanish, Italian, French, academic contests, student council, community service, yearbook and science and technology. Their athletic program consists of basketball, martial arts/self defense, tack, P.E. and yoga.

The parent reviews have some loving the flexible curriculum, loving staff and languages that other schools don’t offer. On the other side parents stated that teachers were lazy, dishonest and could care less about their students resulting in low grades. The comments of students were also on both sides of the fence with some loving their teachers and other not liking their teachers.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decrease in academic growth from 891 to 878. The state goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The test results for students at International School of Monterey showed high percentages over the state average in the majority of subjects and grades. A couple of scores were below those averages. For example on the Algebra I exam 18% of 8th grade students passed with the state average at 49%.

International School of Monterey cares about their students and the progress. If you have any concerns, it would be a good idea to meet the various teachers so you can get a feel of the learning environment.
