Huntington Park College-Ready Academy High School Review

Huntington Park College-Ready Academy High School opened in 2005 for students in grades 9th through 12th. The school focuses on college prep for every student. They focus their efforts in low-income areas where achievement rates are not as high as other areas in California to ensure that all students have the same opportunities of attending college upon graduation.

Among the core subjects students can choose from other courses. Those include computer arts, dance, drawing/painting, theater/drama, Spanish, cross country, basketball, cheerleading, softball, track, P.E., volleyball, debate science/technology, community service yearbook, newspaper, student council and academic contests.

The reviews from parents state that the teachers are kind and engaging. Students and parents do agree that while college prep is supposed to be the focus it is not and that is frustrating. Parents were also concerned with the test scores.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decrease from 792 to 782. The statewide goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The test results at Huntington Park College-Ready Academy High School are mixed. 69% of students in the 9th grade passed the Algebra I exam with the average at 25%. For the Algebra II exam 25% of 10th graders passed. The state average was 42%.

Parents were pleased with the California Exit exam taken by 10th graders. On both the English Language Arts and Math exams students exceeded the state averages with percentages in the 90s.

Huntington Park College-Ready Academy High School works with each student to reach the highest potential. If you do have concerns, it would be a good idea to talk with parents that have students enrolled before enrolling your child.
