Humanities and Science High School – Tempe Review

Humanities and Science High School opened their public charter school in Tempe in 2001 to offer students in 9th through 12th grades with an alternative to public education. The school bases its curriculum on the humanities and sciences which will help instill life long learners, as well as teach social responsibility, as well as prepare students for higher education or joining the workforce.

The Humanities and Science High School goes beyond basic subjects and the normal electives and extra curricular activities you see at other schools which include a wide array of languages including Arabic, Cantonese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, mandarin, Russian, Spanish, and tagalong. Extracurricular activities include golf, bowling, martial arts, environmental habitat restoration, fly fishing, trips to Canyon de Chelly, ASU Public Art Program, Orienteering, Great Books Workshops, and ASU Museums, Galleries, and Collections. The school also offers other facilities such as a conference center, botanical gardens, and computer lab. Instructional programs offered include Great Books of the Western World, College Board Advanced Placement Courses, Accelerated Program of Study, Shared Inquiry and Cooperative Learning, American Red Cross Sports SafetyTraining, Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation Training, Rosetta Stone Language Learning Success, and College Level Examination Program.

Parents and students alike only have positive things to say about the school. The school has helped many students receive an Associate Degree while working on graduating from high school. The small class size is excellent with only around 20 students in the school which allows a more personal educational environment and a family feel, which students really enjoy. Students are very pleased with all the options offered at the school including the advanced programs and extra curricular activities.

Students at the school participated in the SAT9 exam and scored higher than the state average in reading, language, and math. The school has a 100% attendance rate, 95% promotion rate, 81% graduation rate.
