Horizon Charter School Review

Horizon Charter School opened in 1993 for kindergarten through 12th grades. The Horizon Charter School has the idea that all children learn differently and that logic is applied to the curriculum. The programs focus on different learning styles, abilities and interests. Parents can choose from home schooled learning, independent study, and site-based teachings.

With core subjects as the main objective Horizon understands that its students need more to grow as individual students. Other courses offered include college prep, Montessori philosophy, health, physical education classes, Spanish, and computer courses.

Flexibility at this school is great for the parents that want to be involved and that’s why parents love it. For some children not engaging in classrooms can be difficult, but for others they liked the freedom of independent learning. Other students would like to see more events for home schoolers to have the opportunity to participate in such things as yearbook and or various sports.

The Academic Performance Index showed an increase from 728 to 737. The California goal is 800 per school.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

Students at Horizon Charter School tested above the state average in some areas and below that average in other areas. For example 46% of students in the 4th grade passed the Math exam with the average at 71%. The Science exam for 5th graders had 50% of students passing while 60% was the average.

The California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) is used to test 10th grade high school students’ skills in English language arts and mathematics. The students at Horizon Charter School were below the state average in both subjects.

Parents are concerned with the test scores and do work closely with the school to raise the scores. For those that have concerns about enrolling their child, talk with parents that have students attending before enrollment.
