High Tech Middle Media Arts Charter School Review

High Tech Middle Media Arts Charter School opened in 2005 for grades 6th through 8th. At High Tech the academic program is based upon the media arts where students can focus on individual areas like journalism, graphic art, film, radio, animation, web page development and fine art. Projects are based upon these areas of interest as well.

Away from the media arts and core subjects students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of other activities. Sports include football, soccer, basketball, golf, softball, baseball, fencing, P.E., tennis, volleyball and yoga. Other classes like band, computer arts, video/film production, dance; photography, drama, drawing, painting, newspaper, student council, yearbook, debate, technology, science, and debate and community service are also available.

High Tech reviews are mixed. The school is project based and that is not for everyone but the parents that liked that raved about it. The school encourages students to color outside the box and that is a well appreciated approach that the majority of parents liked. The staff was also well liked. On the other end some parents disagree with the approach and the flexibility. Students really like the way the teachers offer their help and allow them to be creative.

The Academic Performance Index showed an increase from 821 to 845. The stateside goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The test results for the students at High Tech Middle Media Arts Charter School were above and below the state averages. For example on the 8th grade Science exam 60% passed with the average at 66%. For 6th grade students and the English Language Arts exam 75% passed. The state average was 59%.

This school has encouraging teachers and a rigorous, yet successful curriculum. For more information, schedule a tour and a sit down with the teachers.
