High Tech High – Chula Vista Review


High Tech High opened their Chula Vista campus in 2007 as a charter school for students in 9th through 12th grades. The school offers a unique learning environment that focuses on providing a science and liberal arts education with even more focus on environmental sciences. On average, the school has around 600 students enrolled per year. The curriculum offers personalized learning, project based, and a challenging academic program.

Along with core subjects, High Tech High Chula Vista campus offers extra curricular activities such as drama, photography, film production, dance, painting, chorus, and computer arts. Sports available include baseball, basketball, bicycling, cross-country, fencing, physical education classes, martial arts, ultimate Frisbee, softball, track, volleyball, and soccer. Other programs offered include community service, yearbook, science & technology, debate, multimedia, newspaper, student council, and academic contests.

Parents are happy with the school system and the way in which High Tech blends the curriculum and fundamental aspects starting in kindergarten through high school. Students like the school, stated that teachers are very helpful, and work with them individually when needed.

The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth fro 750 to 763. The goal statewide is a score of 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams at High Tech High – Chula Vista was mixed with some being above average and others below average. Examples include 36% of 9th graders passed the Algebra I exam with the state average at 25% and 30% of 10th graders passed the science exam with the average at 53%.

the California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. In English Language Arts 96% of students passed the exam with the state average at 83% and in math 97% passed with the average at 84%.

The school is providing an exceptional education for students to prepare for college or the workforce. To ensure the school learning environment is one in which your child will succeed it would be a good idea to tour the school.
