Hermosa Montessori Charter Review

Hermosa Montessori Charter opened in 1997 to provide students in kindergarten through 8th grades with an alternative to public education which provides classes in mixed age groupings. The school has a small class size which allows individualized instruction. Along with core subjects the school offers other activities including chorus, sculpture, drama, drawing, badminton, basketball, football, physical education classes, volleyball, swimming,

The reviews of Hermosa Montessori Charter are mainly positive. Most expressed they are very pleased with the calm and nurturing environment that does not tolerate bullying in any fashion. Teachers and staff work with students and parents when an issue arises so the student can learn a better way in which to control problems besides hitting or other behavioral outbursts. There are a few complaints over the past few years especially in 2011 regarding fewer caring teachers as many have left the school.

One of the best ways to determine if a school is actually teaching their students is to look at the testing scores. In the state of Arizona, the AIMS series of test is used to measure the percentage of students that are mastering core subjects. The test is given to specific grade levels and then compared to the state averages. 3rd graders at Hermosa Montessori Charter were below the state average in reading and math; but above the average in writing. 4th graders did very well with more students passing the exam than the state average in reading, science, and writing, but below the state average by 1% in math. 5th graders were above the state average in reading, writing, and math. 100% of 6th graders passed the reading and math exams and 75% passed the writing exam which was at least 30% higher than the average. 7th graders were above average in writing and math with 100% passing the reading exam. 8th graders were above average in math and writing with 100% passing the reading and science exams.
