Hemet Academy of Applied Academics and Technology Review

Hemet Academy of Applied Academics and Technology opened in 2007 to provide students in 9th through 12th grades with am alternative to traditional schools with a curriculum based on math and technology. The school provides small class sizes to ensure students receive the attention they need to reach their goals. The student body is diverse with 47% white, 40% Hispanic or Latino, 8% African American, 2% Filipino, 1% Asian, and less than one percent American Indian.

Along with core subjects Hemet Academy of Applied Academics and Technology offers extra curricular activities including sculpture, painting, theater, dance, chorus, orchestra, film production, computer arts, and band. The sports available at the school are soccer, football, cross-country, swimming, physical education classes, baseball, softball, golf, track, and basketball. Other programs include science & technology, debate, multimedia, community service, newspaper, academic contests, yearbook, and student government. Vocational programs offered include construction, health careers, technology, food service, child care, cosmetology, law enforcement, and agriculture.

Parents expressed the school is doing an excellent job in providing a quality education for students. Students stated that the school is awesome. The advanced students are able to work with other students that need extra help as well as kind and encouraging teachers.

The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 730 to 742. The goal statewide is a score of 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams at Hemet Academy of Applied Academics and Technology was mixed according to the grade level and the subject. Examples include 25% of 9th graders passed the biology with the average at 60% and in English Language Arts 62% passed with the state average at 57%.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. In English Language Arts, 84% passed the exam with the state average at 83% and in math 84% passed with the average at 84%.

Even though some of the exams were below average, the school is doing a fair job of providing a quality education and according to parents, better than traditional schools in the area. It would still be a good idea to learn more about the curriculum and if the learning environment is one, in which your child will excel.
