Ha:sañ Preparatory and Leadership Charter School opened in 1998 for students in 9th through 12th grades offering a bicultural and community based Native American high school. The student body is 98% American Indian and was specifically designed for Tohono O’odham youth as well as American Indians that are looking for a college prep curriculum that is sponsored through the state board for charter schools. The courses are rigorous and blended with O’odham language and history. The curriculum does meet all standards of the state while including subject matter that will instill the pride and self worth in students.
Along with core subjects, the school offers individualized study plans, sponsor leadership, hands on learning, photography, band, drama, and drawing along with sports such as volleyball, basketball, and soccer.
Parents are very happen with the curriculum that allows students to learn about their own history while learning the core subjects in a small classroom environment.
Students at Ha:sañ Preparatory and Leadership Charter School participated in the AIMS series of tests in which all 10th graders must pass or exceed in order to receive their high school diploma.
The percentages of the students at the school that passed or exceeded the exam along with state averages including in reading, 46% passed with the state average at 78%, in science 9% with the state at 42%, in writing 35% with the state at 68%, and in math 15% with the state at 60%.
The test scores are quite a bit below the state average and before enrolling your student, it would be best to learn more about the curriculum. The percentages of students that are passing the exam and closer to graduation are very small when compared to the state averages.
