Happy Valley School Review

Happy Valley School is a charter school that opened in 2000 for students in kindergarten through 6th grades. The school offers an intensive phonics program as well as a “back to basics learning philosophy”. Along with the core subjects the school has options for those that want to become involved in extracurricular activities, clubs, and sports. These include band, computer arts, chorus, drawing, photography, ceramics, soccer, physical education classes, baseball, field hockey, cheerleading, basketball, debate, yearbook, newspaper, student council, and science & technology.

Overall parents are very pleased with the staff, teachers, and the curriculum. The main complaint is that the school does not offer parent involvement in the classroom and a few teachers may not be as caring as most. On the other hand, the reviews of parents were very positive with their students excelling and learning in a caring environment. The parents that have children in the school longer offered more positive response than ones just entering the school. One of the best things about the school is that the students do not have lots of homework as the school staff believes that family time should be just that instead of doing hours of homework.

If you look at the percentage of students at Happy Valley School that passed or exceeded the series of tests required by Arizona, you will see that students are certainly excelling in core subjects with higher percentages than the state average.

In reading, wring, and math 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th graders were all above the state averages and in the 90 percentile. The only class and subject that were not in the 90% group were 8th graders in math with 88% of students passing the exam but the state average was 59%. As you can see students at this school surpassed the averages across the board. The teachers are doing a great job and children are excelling.
