Greater San Diego Academy Review

The Greater San Diego Academy opened in 1999 for students in Kindergarten through 12th grades. This academy focuses on the big picture. They can move students up a grade should that student show the proper potential. Even the teacher can recommend an advancement which shows just how important teacher/student relationships are here.

Teachers have a wide choice of curriculum to allow for flexibility in each child’s potential. There are enrichment classes that are individualized for each student and his or her needs. Contests and essays go hand in hand here along with core subjects. In high school students are offered internships and college planning. Activities offered include computer arts, drama, and Latin, Spanish, yoga and community service.

The overall review of the Greater San Diego Academy was a pleasant one. Parents loved the teachers, the free on site classes and a greater flexibility for learning. Students love that they have the chance to learn and still be a part of their family life even during a normal school day. Unique is a word that was used over and over again.

The Academic Performance Index showed an increase from 747 to 784. The statewide goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The test results were mixed. On the US History exam 39% of 11th graders passed while, the state average was 48%. On the Science exam 47% of 8th graders passed compared to the state average of 66%. On the 3rd grade Math exam 40% passed while the state average was 69%.

The California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) is used to test 10th grade high school students’ skills in English language arts and mathematics. These results were also mixed. Math showed 81% passing with the state at 84% and the English Language Arts exam showed 91% passing with the state average being 83%.

The Greater San Diego Academy is a very dedicated school. They strive each day to give students a flexible schedule and unique learning experience. If you would like more information schedule a tour and speak to the teachers about your expectations.
