Excelsior Charter School – Main Campus opened in 1995 to provide the community and families with an alternative to traditional schools. The school offers unique learning environments where students can learn in the classroom, Independent study, and online classes. The school works with students in 7th through 12th grades personally to create an individualized lesson plan that will ensure their success.
Along with core subjects, Excelsior Charter School – Main Campus provides extra curricular activities including theater, photography, computer arts, orchestra, film production and band. Sports offered include volleyball, track, softball, football, baseball, cross-country, golf, marital arts, cheerleading, and basketball. Other programs available include yearbook, student government, community service, multimedia, newspaper, and science & technology. Vocational opportunities include technology and construction.
Most parents are impressed with the school stating that communication lines are excellent. Teachers have meetings with parents as well as students every other week to show the progress of each student. Teachers are very encouraging and help students succeed. Students said they really enjoy the various learning environments and the extra curricular activities offered.
The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 759 to 767. The goal statewide is a score of 800.
The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams at Excelsior Charter School – Main Campus showed percentages both above and below state averages according to the grade level and the course. Examples include 62% of 7th graders passed the English Language Arts exam which was the state average and 21% of 8th graders passed the Algebra I exam with the state average at 49%.
The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. The percentage of students passing the English Language Arts exam was 86% with the average at 83% and 83% in math with the state average at 84%.
