EXCEL Prep Charter School – San Bernardino Review

EXCEL Prep Charter School – San Bernardino opened in 2010 to provide students with the opportunity to learn in a safe and nurturing learning environment. The school offers college preparatory setting and curriculum for students in kindergarten through 6th grades. The student population is diverse with 90% African American, 6.7% Hispanic or Latino, and 3.3% White. The school offers small class sizes with an average enrollment of 70 students per year.

The curriculum models used include individually guided instruction, standards based, and project based with a focus on performing arts. The school offers an extended school day as well as before and after school programs.

Along with core subjects, EXCEL Prep Charter School – San Bernardino offers extra curricular activities, sports, and student clubs for students that wish to participate which include choir, drama, dance, cheerleading, and reading club.

The opinion of parents is very mixed with some saying the school is the best educational facility in the area to others stating the school is not providing students with a good education. Some parents stated the school works with students on an individual basis, has several field trips, and a great music department. On the other side, a few parents complained of the lack of a playground. Students had positive remarks stating they like their teachers and the fun things they do to learn.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline in academic growth from 769 to 726. The goal statewide is a score of 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The majority of the results were not available at the time of this writing for EXCEL Prep Charter School – San Bernardino except for 2nd grade, which scored below state averages.

To ensure EXCEL Prep Charter School – San Bernardino is the right school for your child, it would be best if you took a tour of the school, asked more about the curriculum as well as results of the state exams.
