Estrella High School Review

Estrella High School is a charter school that opened in 1997 in Avondale. The school serves on average 531 students in 9th through 12th grades. The school curriculum focuses on the core subjects with a focus on business. Along with core subjects the languages taught at Estrella High School include Spanish, Latin, Italian, and Japanese. The school offers quality and supportive teachers and staff that have the desire to ensure all students meet their goals whether to attend college or to join the workforce upon graduation.

Estrella High School also provides extracurricular activities such as drama, photography, film production, orchestra, painting, dance, computer arts, band, chorus, and ceramics. Sports available include
baseball, basketball, volleyball, football, softball, soccer, and physical education classes. Student clubs are also available such as yearbook, multimedia, student council, and newspaper.

Parents expressed a noticeable change in their children after leaving public school and attending Estrella High School in that grades improved, their children wanted to attend school, and were excited to learn. The school provides a family type atmosphere and close knit community which is safe and secure. Most parents were very pleased with the small classroom size and that staff and teachers know students by name.

A few parents expressed that this was the best school for their student that was behind in credits, had been skipping school, and had no desire to receive an education. Once begging to attend this school, the students were involved and wanted to succeed. Others were very impressed with the accelerated program that helped them graduate sooner than expected.

Students at Estrella High School participated in the AIMS series of tests that measures if students have mastered core subjects. Percentages of students that passed or exceeded the standards along with state averages are listed below.

In reading, 43% of 10th graders passed or exceeded the exam with the state average at 78%, in science 1% with the state at 42%, in writing 37% with the state at 68%, and in math 24% with the state at 60%. It would be in your best interest with scores below the state average to speak with the teachers, staff, and parents with students attending the school to learn why the scores are low. In order to graduate from high school in the state of Arizona, all 10th graders must pass the standards set forth in the AIMS exams.
