East Oakland Leadership Academy High School opened in 2003 for students in 9th through 11th grade. The school centers on disadvantaged students with a focus on English Language Arts, Literature, and Math. The school utilizes a core academic program that is designed to enhance the skills of students. The school offers small classrooms within a structured learning environment and personalized lesson plans. The student body is 67% Hispanic/Latino and 33% African American.

Along with core subjects, East Oakland Leadership Academy High School offers martial arts and physical education classes.

The opinion of parents are very mixed with some stating the school is doing an excellent job of preparing students for their future, while others do not like the school at all. Students stated they are learning better but would like to see more extra curricular activities and sports.

The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 594 to 730.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams at East Oakland Leadership Academy High School was mixed. Examples include 43% of 9th graders passed the English Language Arts exam with the state average at 57% while in Earth Science 55% passed with the state average at 39%.

The California Exit Exam is given to students in 10th grade to test their skills in math and English Language. The percentage of students passing the English Language Arts exam was 81% while the state average was 83% and in math 81% passed with the state average at 84%.

Even with the mixed percentages and the comments of a few parents, the exit exam was not far from the state average and the Academic Performance Index showed a huge increase in academic growth. If you have any concerns, you should visit the school; talk with teachers and parents that have students enrolled.
