Downtown College Preparatory Review

Downtown College Preparatory opened in 2000 for students in 9th through 12th grades. The school offers a college prep curriculum that focuses on core subjects as well as an extended 9-hour school day. All students will take courses in science, social studies, math, and English along with 90 minutes of computer-based learning focusing which will aid in building as well as accelerating reading and math skills.

Along with core subjects, Downtown College Preparatory offers painting, sculpture, drama, photography, dance, computer arts, baseball, physical education classes, volleyball, softball, field hockey, basketball, cross-country, soccer, ultimate Frisbee, newspaper, community, debate, science & technology, yearbook, and student council.

The majority of parents expressed just how much they are thankful for the school and the way they have helped their children succeed. A few parents stated they are not happy with the principal that often misses appointments and seems not to have time for parents.

The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 715 to 734.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams at Downtown College Preparatory was below state averages in all grade levels and subjects.

The California Exit Exam is given to students in 10th grade to test their skills in math and English Language. The percentage of students passing the English Language Arts exam was 85% while the state average was 83% and in math 94% passed with the state average at 84%.

Even though the exams overall were below average, the Academic index showed improvement and the exit exam scores were higher than state averages. The school is providing a quality education; however, it would be a good idea to tour the school before enrolling your child.
