Dehesa Charter School Review


Dehesa Charter School opened in 2001 for students in kindergarten through 12th grades. The school offers personalized learning while using traditional and technological means to help students discover their talents, their strengths and their strengths.

The school uses a variety of teaching methods to ensure that all students have the opportunity to receive a quality education. A few examples of the curriculum models used include core knowledge, accelerated credit learning, gifted, classical, project based, Montessori, independent study, Reggio Emilia, Waldorf, virtual school and standards based.

Along with core subjects, the school offers extra curricular activities including drama, drawing, ceramics, dance, photography, computer arts, film production, and band. Languages offered include Spanish, Latin, Italian, French, Cantonese, Hebrew, Korean, Russian, Tagalog, Mandarin, Japanese, German, and Arabic. Sports include baseball, basketball, cross-country, cheerleading, fencing, football, gymnastics, golf, physical education classes, soccer, martial arts, swimming, softball, volleyball, tennis, track, and yoga. Other programs offered include science & technology, debate, multimedia, yearbook, community service, newspaper, academic contests, and student council. Dehesa Charter School also provides vocational programs such as technology, health careers, construction, childcare, food service, automotive, law enforcement, cosmetology, and agriculture.

The majority of parents stated that Dehesa Charter School is the best option for providing their children with a quality education besides private school. Teachers were described as devoted and caring. Most students stated the school is great and that the teachers work to find the best learning method for each student, which is a huge plus.

The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 745 to 756.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams at Dehesa Charter School was mixed. Examples of percentage of student passing the exams include 3rd grade math 60% with the state at 69%, 5th grade English Language Arts 68% with the state average at 63%, and 9th grade general math at 22% with the state average at 18%.

The California High School Exit Exam had the percentage of 10th graders passing the English Language Arts exam at 88% with the state average at 83% and in math 76% passed with the state average at 84%.

By the academic growth and the test scores, Dehesa Charter School is doing an above average performance providing students with the tools and resources needed to obtain a quality education.
