Compass High School Review

Compass High School is a charter school that opened in 2001 with an average enrollment of 300 students in 9th through 12th grades. The school offers a unique learning environment with one that offers an individualized program where students can work at their own pace.

Along with core subjects, Compass High School offers extra curricular activities and clubs including computer arts, drama, film production, painting, dance, sculpture, chorus, debate, yearbook, newspaper, multimedia, and science & technology. Sports available at the school include physical education classes and basketball. Vocational programs available include technology, automotive, and construction & building trades. Languages taught include German, Japanese, and Spanish.

A few parents are surprised at the way in which their children can enter the school with less credits than an average student in the same grade and surpass other students to graduate on time or early. The hands on learning environment as stated by parents are exceptional offering students the opportunity to learn and to achieve or exceed their goals.

Students expressed a newfound desire to attend school as well as a better goal to become productive members of society and to further their education. One student expressed his concerns in the curriculum that was not challenging in his/her opinion.

The only downside expressed is the teacher turn over in which the school has new teachers every year that may not be as experienced or as qualified as previous teachers.

Students in the state of Arizona are required to meet or exceed the standards of the AIMS series of tests in order to graduate high school. The percentages of students from Compass High School that met or exceeded the standards are listed below along with the averages of students across the state that met or exceeded the exam.

In reading, 54% of students met or exceeded the exam with the state average at 78%, in science 2% with the state at 42%, in writing 37% with the state at 68%, and in math 15% with the state at 60%.
