Capistrano Connections Academy opened in San Clemente to provide families that wish to home school their children with all the tools, support, and even activities to ensure students receive a well-rounded education. The school opened in 2004 and serves students in kindergarten through 12th grades. The school is a non-classroom based school where students work independently at home via their computers.

Along with core subjects, the school provides student clubs to ensure students can enjoy the interaction with other students in the program. These clubs include book club, art club, broadcast club, brainteasers club, debate club, chess club, environment club, digital storytelling club, pen pal club, math clubs, history club, quiz bowl club, poetry club, science club, robotics club, student leadership club, science in the kitchen club, student newspaper, and student literacy magazine.

Most parents stated that the curriculum is excellent and the fact that their children have the opportunity to join clubs to be around classmates is amazing. Many parents stated that other home school and online school do not offer the same interaction and their children became bored quickly. With Capistrano Connections Academy, their children are never bored. Students love the school since they can work on their own at home, but have the help they need as well as make new friends with the clubs.

The Academic Performance Index showed a slight decline in academic growth from 782 to 778. The percentage of students passing the California Standards Tests were quite wide with some grade levels in some courses being quite a bit below state averages such as 9th graders with a percentage of 17% in world history and the state average at 50% to 5th graders with a percentage of 70% in science with the state at 60%. California High School Exit Exam showed that 93% of 10th graders passed the English Language Arts tests with the state average at 83% and in math 85% with the state average at 84%.

Even though there are no numbers on the graduation rate, the Exit Exam is a good indicator that a large number of students are graduating from the school.

In order to do well in an online school, students must be able to work independently. It would be a good idea if you made the decision on whether your child will do well in this learning environment before making a final decision.
