CALS (California Academy for Liberal Studies) Early College High School Review

CALS (California Academy for Liberal Studies) Early College High School opened in 2003 as an alternative to traditional school offering families the opportunity to provide their children with a quality education in a safe and nurturing environment. The school offers the traditional curriculum; however, offering small class sizes, personalized assistance, and extensive exposure to the arts.

The school offers a very unique college high school model with the first classroom being in an office high rise building encompassing the 3rd and 4th floors and the classroom at a local community college for one course every semester. This provides students with not only a high school education but also college credits.

Along with core subjects, the school offers football and basketball. No other extra curricular activities, sports, or clubs are mentioned.

Parents are very happy that the school offers students the opportunity to attend college while still in high school. Students enjoy the curriculum and agree it stimulates them as well as helps them grow academically. The major complaint is that the school needs more activities for students to grow socially as well as stated by a few parents.

The API when compared to other high schools in the state ranked CALS (California Academy for Liberal Studies) Early College High School 7 out of 10.

The percentage of students that passed the California Standards Tests was below average in English and biology, while percentages were above in geometry, US history, and life science. The California Exit Exam given to 10th graders to measure if they are mastering English and Math showed that 65% of the class passed English with the state average at 59% and 71% passed math with the state average at 56%.

To make a decision if the school is the right step for your child, it would be a good idea to take a tour and learn more about the curriculum.
