California Montessori Project – Elk Grove Campus Review

California Montessori Project opened their Elk Grove Campus in 2001. The school serves around 300 students in kindergarten through 8th grades using a Montessori curriculum. The charter school is part of the California Montessori Project that works with parents and teachers to provide an alternative to traditional schools. The network of schools serves students via six campuses within the Elk Grove Unified School District. The students at this time mainly live in Galt, Elk Grove, and Sacramento. Students that attend the Elk Grove campus are motivated to become life long learners as well as independent thinkers that can work independently or in groups

Along with core subjects, students at the Elk Grove campus can join extra curricular activities such as drawing/painting and computer arts. Languages taught at the school include Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Mandarin, Japanese, and French. Sports offered include basketball while the only student club is yearbook.

Parents love the school, staff, and teachers that are helping their children excel while working at their own pace. Students expressed just how much fun they have school and that learning is fun instead of boring. Teachers are very dedicated as stated by parents. The only complaint by a few parents is that the school could use some more space and possibly a few more activities for students.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline in academic growth from the base of 828 to 782. The California Standards Tests have the percentage of students passing the exams up and down. Second graders were above average, third, fourth, and fifth graders were above average in English but below average in math, Fifth graders were also above average in science. Sixth graders were below average in both courses. Seventh graders were above average across the board, while eighth graders were below average in all courses.

With the tests scores being sporadic and the decline in academic growth, it would be a good idea to talk with other parents to ensure this is the right school for your child. You may also want to learn more about the curriculum.
