California Montessori Project – American River Review

California Montessori Project opened their American River campus in Fair Oaks in 2001 for students in kindergarten through 7th grades. The school uses the Montessori Method to provide a quality education. The school offers multi age classrooms, choice of activities with a range of options, and a curriculum that allows students to learn by discovery.

Along with core subjects, California Montessori Project – American River offers extra curricular activities, which include orchestra, band, computer arts, chorus, painting, and drama. The school offers several different languages students can learn including Spanish, Italian, French, Cantonese, German, Mandarin, and Japanese. Students can enjoy joining sports like yoga, physical education classes, martial arts, baseball, and basketball. Other programs available include newspaper, yearbook, and science & technology.

The Montessori Method is completely different from a traditional school setting as is not for every child or family. Some parents truly love the school while others are not fond of the learning environment. Students stated they enjoy attending the school and that teachers help them every time they need help. Parents expressed that the school and staff do very well providing a great education for students. The school is more like family than school.

The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 812 to 814.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students that passed the exams was 54% in English, 50% in Math, 56% in science, and 48% in History.

Since the comments of parents are mixed, it would be a good idea if you visited the school and learned more about the learning environment to ensure you are comfortable with the Montessori Method.
