Barona Indian Charter School Review

Barona Indian Charter School opened in Lakeside in 2002 to provide Native American students with an alterative to traditional school settings with the focus on reading, writing, math, social studies, science and instruction in Kumeyaay language and culture. The school on average has 100 students enrolled in grades kindergarten through eighth per year. The school stresses the importance of education, as well as becoming productive members of their community Teachers are devoted and caring. The small class size aids students in learning in more family style atmosphere. Even though the school is centered on providing Native American students with the opportunities to succeed, the school has a multicultural student body.

Along with core subjects, the school offers extra curricular activities including chorus, computer arts, drawing, and film production. The only sports available are physical education classes. Other programs offered students can join include multimedia, science & technology, community service, and yearbook.

Parents love the school and believe the school is offering students that might not be able to receive a quality education from traditional schools the opportunities to excel. Parents expressed that the school is family oriented and that the school always offers a wide array of activities that help students feel more appreciated. Some parents stated that the largest classroom only has 20 students but most have quite a smaller number, which is great.

Even though the California Standards Tests did not show the percentage of students passing the exam were great with some being below average, the Academic Performance Index showed that the school had marked improvement in academics when compared to the year before.

The school is providing a good education for students and puts the students first. To make a decision if this is the right school for your child, you should visit the school and learn more about the environment and the curriculum offered.
