Aspire Langston Hughes Academy Charter School Review

Aspire Langston Hughes Academy Charter School serves students in 6th through 10th grades in Stockton. The school opened in 2006 to provide students with a school that offers individualized lessons plans that ensure students can learn and achieve the skills needed to enter a university or college. Aspire Langston Hughes Academy Charter School is part of the Aspire Public Schools which is among the top performing schools in the US serving low-income families.

All students that attend an Aspire Public School are provided with the tools needed to meet requirements to enter college or university often earning college credits while obtaining their high school diploma. One of the programs used by Aspire Public Schools is the College for Certain education. The program provides students at risk with the opportunity to meet requirements to enter college.

The Aspire Langston Hughes Academy Charter School offers the same methods of learning found at all Aspire Schools including distributed practice, massed practice, inquire, project based instruction, explicit instruction, apprenticeship, and problem solving. Along with core subjects, the school offers extra curricular activities, sports, and student clubs such as band, drama, painting, physical education classes, basketball, baseball, cheerleading, cross country, softball, soccer, track, volleyball, newspaper, multimedia, debate, student government, and science & technology.

There are mixed reviews regarding the school with some parents loving the school and others feeling the school is not doing as good of a job as they desire. Most parents are very pleased with the curriculum and believe their students are doing better here than they were in traditional schools. Most students are excited about the choices in extra curricular activities as well as the opportunity to take college courses along with high school courses.

The California Standards Tests results have most grade levels and most courses below average. The Academic Performance Index did not show any growth since the last year.

It would be a good idea to take a tour of the school and learn more about the results of the tests prior to entering your child in the school.
