Aspire East Palo Alto Charter School (EPACS) Review

Aspire East Palo Alto Charter School (EPACS) opened in1997 in East Palo Alto to provide students in kindergarten through 8th grades with an alterative to traditional schools. The school gives students the skills needed to achieve academic success for their remaining educational years. East Palo Alto is part of the Aspire Public Schools, which is rated among the top performing schools in the US. The school centers on providing low-income families with a quality education option to help students meet the requirements to enter a university or college.

Each student that attends a school in Aspire network of schools receives the skills needed to receive a college education. One of the programs that is helping students succeed is the College for Certain education, which is helping students coming from low-income families, have the opportunity to attend college and often they are the first in their family to achieve this goal.

The Aspire East Palo Alto Charter School uses various teaching methods, which have been proven to help students succeed. These include distributed practice, massed practice, explicit instruction, apprenticeship, inquire, project based instruction, and problem solving. Along with core subjects, the school offers dance, drama, painting, physical education classes, basketball, football, soccer, and yearbook.

Teachers are very happy working with students and helping them achieve success. Parents are glad the school is helping their students learn as well as enjoying learning. The school offers a safe learning environment where all students feel at home and special.

The percentage of students that meet or exceeded the California Standards Tests was up and down with some below average and most above state averages.

By the comments of parents and the majority of test results being average or above average for the state, the school is doing a good job providing students with the skills needed to succeed. It is still a good idea to take a tour of the school before enrolling your child.
